Skype News Skype News & Press ReleasesSkype Release Notes (Change Log)June 2006 WiSPA ADC solves one of my biggest pet peeves with Skype audio devices allowing you to switch audio devices on the fly for Video Calls, partly because I asked them to improve this utility. Currently it takes 8 mouse clicks to change your audio devices. I covered this in my "Top 5 Skype Gotchas" article. WiSPA ADC makes it a shortcut key "ctrl-alt up-arrow" by default. This is a "MUST HAVE" utility for Skypers that switch between audio devices and/or do Video Calls and want to switch between a Cordless telephone/USB device and your Sound card. Michael's first "Must Have" utility rating for Skype. May 2006 CompUSA now carries several Skype products. You can now get several Skype products at your local CompUSA (US only). Packet8 rated best VoIP solution Packet8 won a comparison between Vonage, AT&T CallVantage, Verizon VoiceWing and iConnectHere. Skype was NOT part of the comparison. Packet8 Also offers a Video Phone option as well which VideoCall4Free.com does not favor for a Video Call device since it is a standalone telephone with a small screen that every party you want to call must have. For the price - it does not make sense. Mar 15, 2005
Skype router coming in the future Zennström: Many people like to keep their computers on most of the time, so connectivity isn't an issue with them. But, yes, some people don't like to have their machines running all day. So we are working together with a partner on a router-based product to reach out to a larger group. We will integrate our software either into the cordless handset or the base station, which users can then connect directly to their router. We can't say today when we will launch this new product. Skype CEO sounds off on the future Video Calls, a hardware router, and other improvements for the fastest growing VoIP solution. Zennström: Skype is growing extremely rapidly: We have 29 million users and are adding 155,000 users each day. Most of them run the software on their computers, but we also have around 1.3 million Pocket PC users. Zennström: We now have around 1 million customers for this service. They pay €0.017 (US$0.023 ) to call to any landline in 20 countries. We're also working on a logical counterpart: SkypeIn, which accepts calls from the public telephone network. IDGNS: So with quality like that, what else are you planning? Zennström: Video calls. IDGNS: Is there a market for that? Zennström: If you go to Logitec (Inc.), they'll tell you that they're selling over 10 million Web cameras a year. Video on the Internet has suffered from poor quality, mainly because the video streams are passing through many servers and using narrowband codecs. But since we use P-to-P, we're expecting much better quality. IDGNS: But your computer must be running all the time. Some people don't want to have their machines running all day. Are you looking at a product for these users? Zennström: Many people like to keep their computers on most of the time, so connectivity isn't an issue with them. But, yes, some people don't like to have their machines running all day. So we are working together with a partner on a router-based product to reach out to a larger group. July 30th, 2004 - This is a MUST TRY piece of software Skype releases official version 1.0 !! Skype is no longer Beta and is ready for prime time. Skype is by far the BEST free tool available on the Internet I have ever found! I cannot say enough about this fine piece of software for talking with your friends and family members PC to PC. It even works over a 56k dial-up modem connection !!! I tested it in a 3 way conference call with my friend and cousin and one of them was using a 56k dial-up connection and it worked just fine. Granted, hi-speed works much better, but if a modem is all you have and you want to keep the cost down for Virtual Visitation Calls, this is the way to go !! Skype also has the ability of making PC to land line phone calls and it works GREAT and is cheap! Granted, you have to purchase what is known as "SkypeOut" minutes, just like a calling card in Euro's, but the calls are only $.012 per minute. When I am on the road I can phone home and check messages on my cell and home from my laptop wherever I am and call my friends for only a few cents anywhere in the world.
