Use Skype to make Free Video Calls:

Using Vonage and Skype together

Mar 5, 2005

Author: Michael Gough

I have been asked many times 'Why Skype' and what about services like Vonage, AT&T CallVantage and others.  Well I have recently converted from my SBC Local Phone Service to Vonage and yes, I still use and love Skype.

In fact, I have my computer, Cordless phone/answering machine and Vonage all connected together using my Actiontec Internet Phone Wizard so I can answer and make Skype, SkypeOut or Vonage calls anywhere in my home and NOT be at, or have to touch my computer.  The picture below gives an idea of my configuration.

The Vonage Linksys PAP2 that I have has another phone port on it, but Vonage requires a 2nd phone number to enable this port at $9.99 per month for a dedicated FAX or second phone line for example.  I have an HP G85 that I have connected to Phone port 1 and then then the G85 out to the Actiontec, so my FAX is inline versus being on Phone port 2 of the PAP2.

Vonage also charges $9.99 per month for their Xten SoftPhone option so that you can use your computer or laptop (Windows or MAC only) to make and receive computer calls if you want this feature.

I purchased the Vonage $14.99 per month 500 minute plan as I don't need a lot of minutes as I have Skype and SkypeOut to supplement my Local and Long Distance calling.  More people call me on Skype then my home phone anymore.  My SBC local phone Bill was $38 per month for basic service and no long distance.  I have been relying on Skype and SkypeOut for my Long Distance for over 6 months now and have not paid more than $35 US in the last 6 months for long distance calls most of my long distance charges were accrued when I was overseas calling back home to the states.  So less than $10 in the last 6 months is my estimate for family and friends.  Since I moved, that means everyone I know is a long distance, Skype or SkypeOut call.

Vonage is my local and basic long distance carrier, Skype is also my Local and Long Distance provider

Vonage is now my local phone carrier that includes 911 and all the local phone features, call waiting, caller ID etc.  Skype and SkypeOut give me inexpensive long distance and keeps my minutes down on my Vonage since so many people I know use Skype.  I don't need the more expensive Vonage unlimited Plan for $24.99 per month - Skype reduces this need.  I also don't need the Vonage SoftPhone option at $9.99 per month as I have Skype that runs on my computer, laptop and Pocket PC for portability and is FREE, no monthly charge and only per minute usage when I want to make SkypeOut calls.

Conclusion - Use both Vonage and Skype

I have cut my local phone bill in half, have the same if not more features and benefits using Vonage over my Local Phone company SBC and still have full use of Skype and SkypeOut all using my Cordless Phone and I don't have to ever touch my computer to answer or make Skype, SkypeOut or Vonage calls.  It happens all through my Cordless Phone and Actiontec IPW, which also takes messages from Skype and Vonage.  Skype gives me the portability I need as I travel and inexpensive long distance, Vonage gives me cheaper local and some free long distance.  Together I have cut my Phone Bill in half, probably 2/3 and can use it anywhere in the world I travel.  Of course.. I also have a Cell Phone.
